EHDSpotlight: A Life-Changing Trip to Honduras

Mariah Landis, a Commercial Account Manager in our Lancaster office, recently returned from a mission’s trip to Honduras through the Lancaster-based non-profit The Factory Ministries. The Factory Ministries, a client of EHD, is a non-profit based in Paradise, PA, which “reaches out through the Factory House and [their] youth center with resources to help those who struggle with issues of poverty”. As a teen mentor in the Factory Youth Center, Mariah was excited to jump on the opportunity to volunteer for a mission’s trip to the Legacy of Hope in Honduras, a sister mission from April 28th -May 6th, 2017.

The Legacy of Hope is a group of foster homes in the city of Santa Rosa de Copan where missionaries provide housing, education, and sustenance to 30 local foster children. This mission is more than a series of foster homes aiding orphaned Honduran children; it is a community where the children have caring foster parents and “siblings”, where they are provided the basic daily necessities people in the States tend to take for granted. They eat most of their meals as a community at a large outdoor table and spend almost all of their time together. All of the foster parents are American, which leads the children to become bilingual, learning both English and Spanish from a young age. In addition to the house “parents”, there are also staff members who help with community tasks.

While their foster parents were back in the States seeking training and respite, Mariah, along with 5 other missionaries, kept the ministry running. Her group provided meals, worked with the children on their schoolwork and served as interim “house parents” in each of the five homes in the development. Mariah said that the amenities we take for granted every day such as water, indoor plumbing and electricity are scarce in the town and made her realize how important it is for us to give back.

If she could express anything as a result of her trip, Mariah said it would be to say how important and life changing it is to get out and volunteer in our communities. As a weekly volunteer in the Factory’s Lancaster location, she never thought she would get the opportunity to travel and volunteer abroad. She said that her work with the Factory Ministries has been life-altering and it has provided her countless opportunities for personal growth. She stressed the importance of getting outside our comfort zones and the rewarding nature of giving back to those who most need it.  EHD is proud to have such a giving, thoughtful person on our team and to serve as The Factory Ministries Insurance Partner.
