Al Lubas, vice president of EHD and one of the top football officials in Berks County, was inducted into the Berks County Football Coaches Hall of Fame on June 3 as one of five members of the organization’s 2012 class — its 10th class since the Hall’s founding in 2003. Lubas and his classmates join the current 58 members of the Hall, a roster that includes former players, former or current head and assistant coaches, and four special contributors.

“Lubas was a star linebacker and running back at Central Catholic who went on to play at the University of Richmond and has become one of the top officials in the county.

He received the Ron Kichline Memorial Award as Berks’ Outstanding Player as a senior at Central in 1968. He was a first-team Tri-County Conference pick at running back and the Cardinals’ Most Valuable Player.

He was selected as a linebacker on the Reading Eagle’s All-Century team in 1999.

Lubas played four seasons as a linebacker at Richmond, helping the Spiders reach the Tangerine Bowl in 1971.

He has officiated two state championship games: the 2001 Quad-A game and the 2011 Single-A game.

He also has worked two state semifinals, eight Eastern semifinals, 10 district championship games and the 2007 Big 33 Game.

He has been a member of the Reading Football Officials Association for 38 years, has served as rules interpreter for 20 years and as the new officials training instructor for 10 years.

He has worked for 31 years at Engle-Hambright & Davies construction and bonding insurance broker, where he is the vice president and a partner.”
